The Clouds Have Cleared

We made it through Rita without much trouble, but I must tell you she was something to see. We watched her through the window of Karim's hotel, which was in a mandatory evacuation zone, and which was where we spent the duration of the hurricane. We couldn't make it out of town without some sort of miracle, so we went to "high ground" and toughed it out. In the end, she didn't do too much damage to our neck of the woods, and when we came back home yesterday, the power had never even gone out. It had, of course gone out in the hotel late friday night when we were attempting, as a group, to take non-perishable food items from the restaurant to the stairwell on the third floor. Luckily, I had a candle and lighter in my pocket, and as no one had a flashlight handy at that moment, we carried our boxes of pudding, bread and juice, which were all we were able to get before "lights out", down a very dark stairwell. It is miraculous that we all made it down safely.
We filmed what we could of the oncoming storm, but only what could be filmed with the power cord, as our battery is kaput, so when the lights were cut, all we could do was sit and listen. Disappointed that I hadn't actually heard glass breaking or large objects smacking the building, we went to bed and slept pretty hard until about 9:00 Saturday morning. By then, all that was left was a bit of wind. It didn't even rain much at all. Although I'm slightly disappointed that there wasn't more excitement, I am very thankful that it wasn't as destructive as originally predicted.
It's nice to be home. It didn't take any time at all to put our house back together again and tomorrow I start work, as if nothing ever happened.
