Interior Insanity

Today has been a very busy one, especially for Karim who didn't get much sleep at all before he had to go back to work tonight. We went out to a used furniture store this morning where we purchased a nice loveseat with great "bones". The upholstery is quite outdated and it's pink and aqua Navajo design makes my eye twitch. However, I work in a home decorating store. The nursery colored Southwest print will soon be covered by a lovely beige or ivory couch cover. We were also given a queen mattress from the owner of the "flea bag". All we need to do for that is find a good box spring and hollywood frame. I have been keeping a discerning eye out on the products we sell and am convinced that I know which curtains to put in the bedroom and living room, which Persian rug shall cover the slate blue carpet, and which pillows will be tossed on the comforter that I have already brought home. We have so many little accessories that we brought with us from Egypt that we already have a theme going for the living room...hmmm, Egyptian?
We are ready to move. All we have to wait for, really, is the telephone service which should be available on Friday. We ordered DSL which will make our lives so much easier. Karim was telling a friend this afternoon that the only reason he got an apartment was for the kitchen. I agree that this is the number one reason. However, I think that Karim will appreciate that his boss and coworkers will not be calling him whenever someone decides they don't want to work the entire shift, "Would you please cover me?" There will be less advantage taking, and more sleeping for my poor overworked, underpaid pharaoh. I will rest in the knowledge that I can relax in my own personal space.
You may think that I'm making a larger deal out of moving into an apartment than I need. But, we haven't had our own space for seven long months. Before this, we lived in a three bedroom apartment in Egypt, but didn't have decent appliances, counters or cupboard space in the kitchen. It has been almost three years since I have been able to cook a meal with the ease of the common American kitchen, and gosh darnit almighty, am I looking forward to our first meal in our new place. (It will be Egyptian food, though). In my next post, I think I will pass along some good old-fashioned Egyptian recipes. None of them will ever contain pork, so if you eat piggies, then you'll have to do the substitutions yourself. Pig
