A Stimulating Subject
Night raids, spies, sneak thieves, and world conquest. Sounds intriguing, doesn't it? But, I'm not talking about war, politics, or even modern times…I'm talking about something so simple, yet so historically complex that you would have to shake your head in wonder. I'm talking about something that controls many people's lives today…including mine…something that we don't think about much on the average. Every morning, we stumble out of our beds, and the first thing we do, because of this control, is turn on the coffee pot. Some of us even have timers on the coffee pot so that upon waking, there is coffee already waiting. I've just been reading some interesting history on coffee that, in my opinion, rivals the best spy novels out there.
I love coffee. It is (In the words of Ernest Hemmingway) the "eau de vie", the water of life...(accompanied by chocolate, what more could one want?) I always feel a sense of sadness, a post java blues, as it were, when I finish off the last drop from my mug, looking around toward the pot to see if there is one more serving left. I suppose that qualifies me as an addict, but there are worse things to which I could be addicted. I'm not a smoker, I drink perhaps once a year, and drugs are out of the question, so I guess my "drug" of choice then, would be coffea arabica.
So, as I fill my mug, yet again this morning, I raise a toast to the famous coffee bean, and I say, may it bring health and long life to all who drink it.
