For Mediha

I wrote this poem when there was turmoil between the two households, Karim's family's and ours, and even though it seems a little strange, I think it is appropriate for mother's day. There isn't trouble between all of us any longer, but I still stand by these words...

For Mediha

I wish for you the best of this world--
I wish for you to shed the sadness of your dull life
and find the happy thing you seek.
I wish that all your shattered dreams
And all your broken hopes will be mended
Of course, they can never be mended
By the hand that broke them,
But by the hand of God--
Great and Merciful is He!
May you sleep with peace at night
And wake with renewed joy with every new day.
May you feel the warmth of the sun
And the gentle brush of the rain
The cleansing rain.
I pray that those who dominate you
Will be dominated by you
And those who carelessly use you
Will be tossed aside by you.
I pray that you will throw off the bars of your sad prison
So that you may play in the flowers once again.
And I pray that you will shed your guilt
And forgive yourself for forgetting yourself--
For you will never truly love till you love yourself--
And you will never truly live until you love.
From your Daughter-in-law
